WHAT IS AN EGRESS WINDOW?
Egress means to go out. Egress windows are windows you can use to leave your home.
A window that can be easily opened from inside the building with the use of keys, tools, or difficulty. In Ontario the building code states that these type of windows must be in every bedroom of a suite to ensure all occupants have a point of escape in case of emergency.
Ontario Building Code Requirements
- Area for egress windows: No less than 3.8 ft2 (0.35 m2)
- Minimum dimension for egress windows: No less than 15 inches (380 mm)
- The opening should be large enough to allow people an easy and quick escape
- Egress basement windows are required by law to have a step to a high window to allow easy exit in case of fire
- Basement egress windows must have window wells that are 760m from the window and an opening of 30 inches deep
Things to consider
DO YOU WANT THE DIRT AND CONCRETE FROM THE INSTALLATION HAULED OFF SITE?
We can have everything hauled off site or leave the dirt and concrete on site in a chosen area for future use.
DO YOU WANT US TO ADD TRIM THE INTERIOR SIDE OF THE WINDOW?
Once the window is installed you have the option of having us “finish” it by adding trim from a variety of styles to match your home or leaving it unfinished depending on the needs of your project.
DO YOU NEED A COVER?
Depending on the style of window you choose and the way it is installed you may decided a window cover would be better for safety. This will help stop pets and small children from accidentally falling into the opening.
